During the 2007-2008 legislative session the DACW and SDTF worked with Senators Sheila Harsdorf and Representative Frederick Kessler to introduce targeted divestment legislation(SB-57 & AB-124).
The legislation received broad sponsorship across party lines in both the Senate and Assembly and received a hearing on March 28, 2007.
The bill still has not yet passed this committee but in March 2008 Senator Spencer Coggs introduced Senate Resolution 28 which advised the Investment Board to adopt a targeted Sudan divestment policy. SR-28 passed nearly unanimously on a voice vote.
The Legislature remains out regular session until January of 2009.
For many who are unfamiliar with divestment, it can be very confusing. We have compiled a list of sources which help explain to you what divestment is, how it works and who it affects.
We urge anyone and everyone in Wisconsin to take advantage of their civil liberties by coming to (or calling) Madison to speak to their legislators about supporing Darfur and Divestment from companies that invest in the Government of Sudan (GoS).
